Conferences and Convocations

LCMS Commission on Theology and Church Relations

As an additional way of carrying out its assignments, the CTCR uses conferences and convocations to bring matters of theology and church relations for discussion to the membership of the Synod.

2015

International Conference on Confessional Leadership in the 21st Century

The second International Conference on Confessional Leadership was held May 3-8, 2015, in Wittenberg, Germany.

The conference theme was “Celebrating the Reformation Rightly: Remembrance, Repentance, Rejoicing.” Conference participants attended the dedication of Wittenberg’s “Old Latin School” and gathered for daily worship in the Stadtkirche, Saint Mary’s, the congregation where Martin Luther preached at least 1,000 times.

An overwhelmingly positive reaction to the first ICCL in 2012 led the 2013 LCMS Convention to encourage a second gathering of worldwide leaders (Res. 4-04). Confessional Lutherans representing 41 countries and 23 million Lutherans worldwide heard presentations on central Reformation truths: Scripture’s authority, the centrality of Christ’s redemptive work for the world, and the Gospel’s assurance of grace through faith in Him.

The conference was a step toward helping prepare world Lutheranism for the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017 and was co-sponsored by the President’s Office and the Commission on Theology and Church Relations.

International Conference on Confessional Leadership in the 21st Century

The first International Conference on Confessional Leadership drew 120 Lutheran leaders from around the world to Peachtree City, Ga., on Oct. 31 to Nov. 2, 2012.

The conference theme was “The Lutheran Church in the 21st Century — Martyria, Diakonia, Koinonia.” Participants gathered for mutual edification, encouragement, and promotion of the Gospel-centered teachings that stand at the heart of the Lutheran Reformation of the 16th century.

Speakers from every region of the globe addressed the joys and challenges of confessional Lutheran churches. The conference was co-sponsored by the President’s Office and the Commission on Theology and Church Relations in keeping with a request from the 2010 LCMS Convention (Res. 3-02A).

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod Inc., including Mission Central (in Mapleton, Iowa), is an IRS registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity.

A contribution designated (restricted) for a specific purpose, when accepted, will be used only to fund expenses related to that purpose. Occasionally, we may receive more in contributions for a particular purpose than can be wisely applied to it in the foreseeable future or the purpose may cease to be feasible. In these situations, the LCMS will make reasonable attempts to contact contributors to apply their contribution toward another aspect of ministry that aligns closely the contributor’s goals and values. If a contributor cannot be contacted, the LCMS will use the gift to meet a similar pressing need that most closely matches the contributor's original intent.

Consistent with Synod Board policy and in recognition of a more challenging economic and philanthropic/fundraising environment due to inflationary pressure, not more than 12.5 percent of any charitable contribution will be allocated to administering gifts and communicating with contributors (compared to a not-more-than ceiling of 10.5 percent the previous fiscal year). Contributions received and accepted by the LCMS are deemed to be in agreement with this statement.
