Hong Kong

  •  Country Summary
  • The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod began work in Hong Kong in 1949 shortly after the formation of the People’s Republic of China. In 1977, The Lutheran Church—Hong Kong Synod (LCHKS) officially became an LCMS sister/partner church. It also is a member of the International Lutheran Council. In July 1997, Hong Kong rejoined China as a Special Administrative Region after being under British rule since 1898.

Today, the LCMS and the LCHKS partner in mission throughout the greater China region. LCMS career and GEO missionaries serve in Hong Kong in partnership with the LCHKS, especially in Lutheran primary and high schools.

More than 22,000 students attend its six secondary schools, six primary schools and 16 kindergartens, which are staffed by 1,279 teachers. The LCHKS’ membership includes more than 8,500 Lutherans who worship at 34 congregations and eight mission stations. There are 30 pastors. In addition to its schools and congregations, the LCHKS also serves people through nurseries, youth centers, social centers for the elderly and a center for the deaf and physically disabled.

Every year, the LCMS sends short-term mission teams to serve alongside LCMS missionaries and LCHKS teachers and staff by hosting special English Bible camps in schools.

Hong Kong International School (HKIS) opened its doors to students in September 1966. HKIS now serves more than 2,600 students and is composed of four schools on two campuses on the south side of Hong Kong Island. The LCMS also supports theological education in Hong Kong and has partnered with the LCHKS to plant a church in Macau, another Special Administrative Region of China.

The LCMS first provided support for mercy projects in 1992, including social work, youth work and education for people with disabilities. Later, support continued for child care, tutoring and family counseling for immigrant families, pastoral care for young drug abusers and at-risk youth, and social work among disadvantaged immigrant families.

  •  Partner Churches
  • A partner church is a church body with whom the LCMS has full altar and pulpit fellowship. Many LCMS partner churches are also members of the International Lutheran council, a worldwide association of confessional Lutheran church bodies. Some LCMS partner churches came into existence through LCMS-supported mission efforts while others have historic roots that pre-date the LCMS or that are sourced in the mission efforts of other Lutheran church bodies.

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod Inc., including Mission Central (in Mapleton, Iowa), is an IRS registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity.

A contribution designated (restricted) for a specific purpose when accepted, will be used only to fund expenses related to that purpose. Occasionally, we may receive more in contributions for a particular purpose than can be wisely applied to it in the foreseeable future or the purpose may cease to be feasible. In these situations, the LCMS will make reasonable attempts to contact contributors to apply their contribution differently. If a contributor cannot be contacted, the LCMS will use the gift to meet a similar pressing need that most closely matches the contributor's original intent. Consistent with Synod Board policy, no more than 13.5 percent of a charitable contribution may be allocated to administering gifts and communicating with contributors. Contributions received and accepted by the LCMS are deemed to be in agreement with this statement.
